Fun Friday: Happy Veterans Day and 11-11-11!

November 11, 2011 – It’s a very special Fun Friday today for several reasons!

First, Happy Veterans Day! It seems that all the holidays are falling on Fridays lately, and Veterans Day is special among the national holidays in that it is 1 of the 5 where the date never changes.

In 1971, the Uniform Monday Holiday Act changed the holiday to fall on a Monday to allow for the 3-day weekend like other holidays (Labor Day, Memorial Day, etc). Many lawmakers and their constituents fought this change, because of the significance of November 11 as Armistice Day, and the date was changed back in 1978.

Ever since, Veterans Day has been a day to honor the nearly 25 million veterans who have served in the military to protect our great country. At We Do Web Content, we love to support local efforts that better our community and would like to spread the word about a great charity event benefitting a South Florida non-profit that provides support to disabled veterans.

Care for Disabled Veterans is hosting a veterans’ appreciation dinner at 6 tonight followed by a charity poker tournament on Saturday night. While registration for tonight’s dinner is closed, you can still register for the poker tournament at the door starting at 4 p.m. Saturday.

Check out their event page for more details and come out to support Care for Disabled Veterans!

Also on today’s special events is the fact that the date is 11/11/11! MSNBC has a spiffy little writeup about the history and myths around 11/11/11 which covers everything from the 11:11 time phenomenon (which many of us have experienced at WDWC!) all the way through the new horror film focused on the date.

One of the lesser known events of 11/11 is National Pocky Day! Pocky is a delicious Japanese cookie snack that comes in long sticks, which happen to look like the number 1…line up 4 of them and you get 11/11, and this year you can line up 6 to spell out the date! According to Japan Today, the day was made popular in 1999 when Ezaki Glico Co., the company that created Pocky (and it’s savory cousin, Pretz), declared 11/11 as “Pocky & Pretz Day” in Japan. Many fans of Japan-related things (anime in particular) in the States celebrate the holiday, too. Pocky can be found at many international food stores, Asian grocery stores, and it has even been spotted in national retailers like Walmart and FYE!

Our Content Manager and resident Spinal Tap nerd/fan Tricia also wants to remind everyone thattoday is Nigel Tufnel Day, in honor of the faux British rocker’s declaration that Tap’s amplifiers “go to 11.” Billboard is celebrating Nigel Tufnel Day with a nod to the 11 Loudest Moments in Music, but you can also mark the occasion by watching the classic 1984 Christopher Guest/Rob Reiner mockumentary.

To close out Fun Friday we would like to remind you that our Panda-monium Photo Contest is still running and there’s still 4 days to get your friends to “like” our Facebook page and do a bit of good! Remember that every new like up until November 15 will donate a can to the Million Meals Committee – one of our local food banks – in time for Thanksgiving! Here’s a little reminder of how to participate in the photo contest – it’s Browser in one of the happiest places on Earth!
