Defining Social Media
When you say “social media” most people think of a specific service like Facebook or Twitter. The official definition of “social media” from Merriam-Webster is, “forms of electronic communication (as Web sites for social networking and microblogging) through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content (as videos)”
Social media isn’t a single platform, it’s the way we share content!
To truly understand social media you need to break it down into its two parts: social and media. If you don’t focus your efforts on both parts, you won’t be getting the whole picture. Being Social with Your Social Media
Social topics have something about them that makes them worth talking about or sharing with others. Boring content is rarely social because it doesn’t accomplish any of the hallmarks of good social content:
- emotional; or
You’ve never read an article online and said, “That was boring, let me share it with my Twitter followers.” We only share content that’s worth sharing. In fact, in today’s society you are largely represented by the kind of content you share on social networking sites. Think about all those stories you hear of people losing jobs because of what their boss saw on their Facebook page – our sharing of media has become part of what defines us socially.
Why do we share? In some cases, it’s to inform others of something interesting or useful we found on the web. In other cases, it’s to entertain by distributing a funny comic or video clip. There are even times when we share to accomplish a goal, such as raising awareness for a cause.
We share because we care. We care about the content that we are consuming and want others to benefit as we have. We share because we want to accomplish something amongst our social circle – entertain, inform, inspire. But what do we share?
We Share Media
Media is the second half of the social media craze. Media can mean a variety of things, and not all of it is contained to what you post on Facebook, or even the Internet in general. Remember that “media” is a broad term – anything you create and share socially can be considered social media. Some examples of media to be shared include:
- videos; and
One of the mistakes that businesses make with social media is that they think they are restricted to social networking sites. Social media is EVERYWHERE! Have you ever talked to a friend about a funny ad you saw on a city bus? That’s media that you are sharing socially through word of mouth. That city bus ad is now social media, because it’s content that is being talked about between consumers.
With Social Media, Content is King
The “media” half of social media is referring to the content you share socially. Content can be as simple as a status update or as complex as a press release. The real lesson to learn here is that without good content, you’re not going to have any media that’s worth sharing amongst social circles.
