Back in the early days of SEO it was “keywords, keywords, keywords!” The old “more the merrier” idea has been fading in the past few years and it’s become known as “keyword stuffing.” This practice, which used to be a foundation for business article marketing, is now becoming a nuisance according to Google.
Google Defines – and Detests – Keyword Stuffing
The official Google Webmaster Tools definition of “keyword stuffing” is:
“the practice of loading a webpage with keywords or numbers in an attempt to manipulate a site’s ranking in Google search results.”
When you see the word “manipulate” it’s usually a sign of black hat SEO article writing – using tricks to attract search engine attention and improve page ranking on result pages.
Google’s definition goes on to explain that keyword stuffing can come in many forms, from lists of irrelevant keywords to overuse in page content. Most of the violations we often see in business article marketing come in the form of the latter, using keywords to the extent that your article becomes bloated with unnatural keywords and phrases.
Tips to Avoid Keyword Stuffing In Your Business Article
Marketing through SEO article writing is a great way to create links to and from your website, as well as to improve your Internet reputation. The best web content for online marketing is content that reads naturally and appeals to the reader while using a few good keywords within the content to draw the attention of the search engines.
Gone are the days where Google ranked a web page based on the number of times a keyword appeared in its content. Today, search relevancy is based on the authority and relevancy of content.
Per Google, the following are some examples of keyword stuffing pitfalls to avoid:
- lists of phone numbers or addresses without good reason;
- blocks of text containing the names of cities or areas you’re trying to market in; and
- repetition of the same words or phrases that results in unnatural content.
An example of the latter would look like this:
At Joe’s Shoes we sell only the finest discount Nike brand sneakers at the lowest prices. You won’t find anywhere else that sells discount Nike brand sneakers at the prices we have! If you’re looking for discount Nike brand sneakers, head to Joe’s Shoes! Discount Nike brand sneakers for the whole family; discount Nike brand sneakers for every lifestyle!
Not only does it read unnaturally, it’s distracting to the reader – did you really get any good information out of that paragraph other than the fact that Joe’s Shoes carries discount Nike brand sneakers? Now, if the paragraph listed the benefits of Nike sneakers, or the types that Joe’s Shoes has to offer, that would be more informative and better suited to rank for Google’s search results (provided they dropped a few uses of that overstuffed keyword).
When you focus on providing good information, facts, tips, and advice, rather than struggling to work in keywords, we find that you’ll produce content that satisfies readers and SEO at the same time.
