Making the Most of the New Facebook Call to Action Button for Your Business Page

By  |  Published

New for 2015: the Facebook Call to Action button for pages. It is a highly-requested feature rolling out to all U.S. Facebook business pages. By now, you should see the “set up a call to action” button on your cover photo. But if it hasn’t appeared yet, don’t worry! Facebook often rolls out new features slowly over a few weeks.

In order to get the most out of this new feature, read up on the various ways to use the CTA button.

Picking the Right Action Category for Your Business

There are currently seven categories to choose from for your button’s text.

  • Book Now
  • Contact Us
  • Use App
  • Play Game
  • Shop Now
  • Watch Video

Each option allows you to link to a webpage. Before you make a selection, make sure you have a page corresponding to that button text.

The “Book Now” category is useful for businesses that have an online scheduling system on their website. “Contact Us” is a great general button option, as most businesses should already have a contact page on their existing website. “Shop Now” is useful for businesses with eCommerce sites.

“Sign Up” is a good option if you want to promote a mailing list or registration for a special event. Finally, “Watch Video” is a good choice if you have a promo or informational video that showcases your business or a product or service you offer.

Two button options are unique to Facebook apps and games. The “Use App” and “Play Game” are best to link to Facebook Apps or Games, or could also be used to link to websites with iOS/Android/Windows apps or online-based games.

Once you’ve selected your button and put in your website URL, you’ll also be able to enter the mobile URL of that page for people viewing your page on their smartphone or tablet. Finally, the prompt will ask you how you want iOS and Android Facebook apps to handle the URL – either open the link as a website or launch an app.

Getting the Most Out of Your New Facebook Call to Action Button

At the very least, you should link the “Contact Us” button option to your website’s contact page. But if you’re looking to really get full use of the CTA option, consider making unique pages for the button. We came up with a few great ideas that you can try.

  • Use “Watch Video” to link to a page that features a video promo for your new eBook at the top and a book request form at the bottom.
  • Use “Sign Up” to get new subscribers to your eNewsletter and change your cover photo to a design that draws attention to the button as a connection to your newsletter sign up.
  • Use the “Shop Now” to highlight a special sale page on your eCommerce site during seasonal sales.

Don’t Worry About Committing to One Button Style

Some businesses may benefit from multiple options. The good news is that you can change the text and action of the button at any time. This is especially useful for businesses that run special events and want to put up a temporary sign-up page for a webinar. Or if your business has multiple promo videos where some are seasonally appropriate, you can change your regular “Contact Us” button to the “Watch Video” button and showcase your yearly Super Bowl ad.

You may want to change up your CTA button from time to time so you can test out different functions. Facebook has already integrated metrics for measuring the performance of your CTA button on the quick stats bar on the right of your page dashboard. Keep an eye on how many times visitors click your CTA button before and after you make a change. After a bit of trial and error, you’ll find out what options get you the most interaction.
