Severe acne is painful enough, but the acne scars that can appear after the inflammation has healed are equally nerve-wracking and can quickly deflate one’s self-esteem.
There are effective (but expensive) options for acne scar treatment and minimization, including over-the-counter scar removal skin care products, microdermabrasion procedures and surgery. But those options are not suited for every budget, or for those patients that prefer to follow a more natural approach to skincare.
For those who wish to first explore home acne scar remedies, there are several natural options, some of which are listed below:
- Vitamin E – Used in lotion or capsule form, vitamin E is believed to prevent and minimize the formation of scar tissue. Use on the skin as it heals from acne lesions, cysts and nodules.
- Essential oils – Diluted rosehip and lavender oils might foster the healing of skin that has been inflamed with acne. Use as the skin is healing from blemishes and apply to acne scars.
- Lemon juice – Fresh lemon juice, applied to the scar might have a “bleaching” effect on the scar tissue. Let the juice soak in for about 15 minutes, but do not try this treatment if you have sensitive skin or plan to be in the sun.
If these remedies fail to bring about the results you are seeking, a dermatologist can likely point you in the direction of more intensive acne treatments and acne scar remedies.
