Older Americans Joining Social Networking Sites in Droves

November 1, 2011 – If anyone ever tells you that social media is for teenagers, you can point them to data from Pew Internet that says otherwise.

This summer, a report from Pew Internet & American Life Project revealed that 65% of adults with Internet access use social networking sites on a regular basis. This is a continuing increase over several years, and a 4% jump from 2010.

This year’s report shows that the growth among young adult users didn’t really increase much, but the “boomers” are jumping on the social media bandwagon at a steady rate.

What does this mean to your business? If you’re in the market to seek mature clients, you’re going to need to consider social media as a marketing method. We’re guessing that the increase in adult users above the age of 50 is due to that group nearing retirement age.

After a lifetime of working, it’s time to kick back, relax, and start consuming all that Internet that’s been built over the last 30 or so years! Many retirees make their first purchase a new desktop or laptop so they can stay in touch with friends, see pics of the grandkids, and now connect to their favorite businesses on Facebook!
