Social Media Advent Calendar Day 16 – Put Your Best Content Forward

By  |  Published

Social media success CAN be bought and paid for, but when you have useful, relevant content marketed in the right venues you don’t have to throw money around. Still, Facebook Ads and Google AdWords can help get your content out to even more viewers, and yes, they can work.

…well, they work only if you help augment their success. A content-based ad is only as successful as the content it promotes. So if you’re looking to run an ad on Facebook or want to choose the keywords to pay for with Google AdWords, make sure the content you’re promoting is up to snuff.

Today’s social media tip is: Don’t use ads to prop up boring content. Use ads to accelerate successful content.*

Run Your Best Content on Social Media Ads

Facebook ads can bring more viewers to your social media pages, so to spruce them up before the crowd arrives. Here are a few tips for tidying up your Facebook page before running an ad campaign:

  • Make sure your last five or so posts are current (within the last 2-3 weeks) and spotlight some of your finest content.
  • Clean up any unrelated or inappropriate posts from others.
  • Make sure your cover image and profile image are professional and functioning properly.
  • Review your information page to make sure everything is accurate.
  • Check that your About Us description is optimized for the keywords and phrases you are targeting, but also readable to potential clients.

After starting your Facebook ad, start featuring more content that puts your best information and knowledge on center stage. Just remember to not make it all business – to court new clients, you want to show them that while you’re professional, you also have a human side. Take some posting time to add in some human interest or entertainment content, especially if it’s about your business!

Don’t Waste Your Dollar on Dull Content

With Google AdWords you can pay for your content to rank higher for certain keywords. If you’ve done your homework, you will have well-optimized content that targets those keywords. What you may not have is quality content that’s readable and pleasing to the human reader.

Keyword-rich content is only truly effective when both humans and machines approve of your writing. The search engines look for keyword density, synonyms, quality links, and overall content relevancy. The humans connecting to you through social media are looking for human readability, interesting content, and easily sharable media.

If your content isn’t performing to the standards of both man and machine, it’s time to get some better content!
