Survey Says: Email Still Top Content-Sharing Source

December 16, 2009 – A newly released study from ShareThis shows that while social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook are great at spreading buzz-worthy links, email is still the most prominent source of sharing links and information to friends online.

According to the story on Mediapost, the ShareThis study found that email accounted for 46% of content-sharing activity online, followed by 35% through Facebook, 14.5% for “other” media channels, and only 6% for Twitter. Don’t fret Twitter fans, while the popular micro-blogging service is on the low end for sharing, the click through rates are pretty impressive, with 40% of the links shared on Twitter generating clicks.

ShareThis also estimates that content-sharing could be responsible for driving as much as 15% to 30% of traffic equivalent to search engine traffic.
