Looking to stay ahead, or at least in line, with third-party developers, Twitter has released their own trend-tracking feature, and yes, it works in real time.
The new interface, called “Trending Topics”, searches Twitter posts and reports back on the hot topics everyone is tweeting about. The trends are updated in real time, so users can really know exactly what’s on everyone’s minds right now.
Third-party applications like Tweetscan and Tweetscoop, provide somewhat similar functions and allow you to track other information like the keywords of your choosing.
Twitter co-founder Biz Stone discussed the new feature in a blog post, “Every public update sent to Twitter from anywhere in the world 24/7 can be instantly indexed and made discoverable via our newly launched real-time search. With this newly launched feature, Twitter has become something unexpectedly important — a discovery engine for finding out what is happening right now.”
While it is still unclear how Trending Topics will impact third-party Twitter application developers, the introduction of this new Twitter feature has the added advantage of convenience. When combined with Twitter’s search feature (they’re both located on the main page), Trending Topics has the possibility of making a huge marketing impact.
That is of course if marketers can respond with something relevant before the tide turns.
