What We Learned on Our SEO Summer Vacation: Meta Descriptions

By  |  Published

If you wound up on our blog through a Google search for something like “awesome web content company” or “best web content provider” you probably saw a small chunk of text underneath our link. This is your meta description, and you’ll want to pay close attention to what it can do for your content and page ranking!

The meta description should be a snippet of what the search engine or your reader can expect within the full content of your page. You see it on the search engine result pages and you can also view it by right-clicking on your page and using the “view source” function if you want to get really technical.

Metas don’t have to be super complicated. While they’re another keyword hotspot, they also need to appeal to the human reader. Use this opportunity to tease the reader into clicking for more – use relevant keywords to hint at what your content has to offer them.

Length for metas is standard around 150-160, and anything over that will usually get the ellipses (…) treatment from Google. That’s a safe one to two sentences to use your keywords in an engaging snippet. This is also a great place to utilize synonyms of the keywords you used in your page title and article header.

Make sure your meta is relevant to your content – misleading metas not only annoy readers who are looking for specific information, but it could also result in Google de-ranking your site because you’re promoting keywords and information that doesn’t relate to the content on your page.

Google’s always changing – can your SEO company keep up?

It’s pretty obvious that websites that constantly produce fresh, relevant content are going to be more appealing to both humans and search engine spiders. Fresh content written for readability is first priority, but once those words sound good it’s time to put them to work in the world of search engine optimization!
