What We Learned on Our SEO Summer Vacation: Page Titles

By  |  Published

Look up. That bold sentence you see isn’t just a blog heading, it’s the page title. Does this matter? You bet it does!

Google loves page titles; in fact, it loves them so much that it’s the hyperlink text used when displaying your website as a hit on a search query result page. You see your page title in three main places:

the search results on Google;
the top of your browser; and
the lead of your blog post.
Ok, we can’t speak for every blogging platform; some of them don’t put the page title or have options to change it, but in general, that’s what your content is leading with – the page title.

Your page title should focus on getting the most important keywords within the first 60-70 characters. Google doesn’t read much beyond that, and neither do most readers; they just want to get on to your content! While you can go beyond 70 characters (and that’s with spaces, mind you) going past 90 is heading into boring territory. You want to hit them hard and fast with keywords relevant to the content on your page.

There’s nothing wrong with a short page title, either, but don’t waste space when you can make it work for you. Ending page titles with branding, especially your firm name, catchphrase or motto, is a good way to create uniformity in your content presentation as well as help you rank for more options on Google.

Google’s always changing – can your SEO company keep up?

It’s pretty obvious that websites that constantly produce fresh, relevant content are going to be more appealing to both humans and search engine spiders. Fresh content written for readability is first priority, but once those words sound good it’s time to put them to work in the world of search engine optimization!
