Who’s Tweeting? 24% of Twitter Posts Created by Bots

August 6, 2009 – A recent study released by Sysomos, titled “Inside Twitter” found that 24% of Twitter posts are created by automated bots and that only 5% of Twitter profiles are responsible for 75% of the tweets found on the site (viaMashable).

The good news is, the 24% of automated posts are not all spam, but mostly automated updates from large accounts like Digg, and third-party systems set up to automatically add Facebook updates and other real-time news.

The study also found that 32% of the tweets generated by the most active Twitter users, are generated by automated bots. These are usually accounts that post 150 + tweets a day, which would be a giant task, even for a team of writers.
